WELCOME TO CAMELLIAS VICTORIA
A big gidday from all your camellia-loving brothers & sisters from Victoria, Australia. Victoria is the southern-most state and is situated in the south east corner of the mainland continent. Tasmania is the only island state and sits directly below Victoria.
Victoria has a temperate horticultural climate from heaven whereby, there is not much you can't grow outside. Our average temperatures range between 15ºC and 30ºC depending upon the season. In the extremes we may have to deal with frosts (mainly inland) and some summer days of around 40ºC with hot north winds. The other consideration is periods of drought which at present is the longest one in recorded memory of about 10 years. As a result, our camellias have all had to survive on restricted water allocations and have shown how drought resistant they are.
In 1951 Victorian camellia enthusiasts contemplated establishing a Victorian Camellia Society. After some discussion with Professor Waterhouse from N.S.W. they instead formed a transnational Society called the Australian New Zealand Camellia Research Society (ANZCRS).
In 1955, the constitution was changed to allow for affiliate state & regional societies. The same year Victorian enthusiasts formed their own branch of the ANZCRS.
Ever since Victoria has been an innovative society with a proud history of camellia breeding where, many of the cultivars have made an impact all around the world. Today we are simply called Camellias Victoria Inc. and as for our camellias, we simply love them.
